Late summer is here! The trees are slowly starting to change color, but the sun is still shining. It's the perfect time to enjoy some late summer coziness!
moreThe best cozy late summer activities
I've collected my favorite late summer activities for you here. Wonderfully cozy things, slow living, self-care, or just a moment for yourself.
Baking bread in the campfire!
My favorite! Super simple and incredibly cozy. A stick, a fire, and some bread dough (note: it needs to rise a bit before it's ready to bake) and you've instantly got a super cozy day. Add a cup of tea and a thick sweater if it starts to get chilly.
The first time I did this was (only!) last year. I just don't know why I didn't do it sooner; it's so cozy and delicious! You can probably imagine I'll be in the garden sometime in the next few weeks, with my bread dough stick, right? A nice bonus, I think, is that it's so quiet outside in the evenings. Most people are already going back inside, so sometimes (even in the middle of our neighborhood) it feels like a vacation—that peace and quiet is wonderful!
Fresh walks through blooming heather
The heather is in bloom! It's wonderful to walk across the heathland and through the woods. In the woods, you can sometimes already smell the early autumn scent, and the heather guarantees beautiful views. In summer, I often find it too hot to wander through the heathlands, but late summer offers a solution! I like to take a thermos of tea with me for those cozy moments (and essential breaks). So, put on your walking shoes and get outside!
Evenings in the garden with thick sweaters and cozy lights
Candles, lamps, a pot of hot tea, homemade cake, a warm blanket, and a cozy, thick wool sweater. Head back and stare at the stars! A fantastic way to end a busy day and unwind. Your nervous system relaxes, and you feel your thoughts slowly quieting. A bat flits by, a hedgehog scurries quietly around. Why do I often forget that this is so much nicer, more fun, and cozier than staying inside? Shall we agree to do this more often this late summer?
Preparing your home for fall
I love nothing more than making my home cozy! Sorting out all my lovely wool sweaters and cardigans and putting them back at the front of my closet. Adding lamps and candles to create a cozy atmosphere in the living room. An extra rug for a cozy feel, and some inviting and inspiring decor.
Experiencing the abundance of autumn
Blackberries, chestnuts, hazelnuts. Just a few of the bounty of late summer. It's so much fun to do something with them. Every year, I make a jar of blackberry jam with the blackberries from our garden. We consciously eat the two hazelnuts our hazelnut tree has (a wonderfully mindful way to be), and I roast chestnuts once a year (even though I don't particularly like them). Everything tastes different and gives me such a wonderful, slow, mindful feeling!
Reading books
Uh... need I say more? Late summer is the perfect time to review your reading list. Gather your favorite books. Find a cozy spot in the house, light a candle, drape a blanket over you, and enjoy a cup of tea. A perfect moment for yourself. It's wonderful outdoors, but inside, basking in the late summer sunshine behind a glass window, is also wonderful!
What are you going to do?
My intention is to do everything on this list at least once. For me, doing things that truly resonate with me, taking things a little slower, is an important value. It keeps me balanced (with my chronic illness). So I'm consciously choosing a cozy late summer. Sometimes it's easier to work longer, snuggle on the couch, or just do what you habitually do every evening. But I've learned that sometimes you relax more with things that truly resonate with you. The things you consciously choose. I'm choosing to do some things from my own list this late summer, how about you?
